Meet the Photographer
Hey, my name is Alysha Dawn
I grew up in country NSW with a lot of space to roam and an imagination that rarely switched off. I’ve always been fascinated by people, places and the stories we build around them — and somewhere along the way, photography became the way I tell them.
Before stepping behind the camera, I spent more than 15 years in front of it, working across fashion and advertising in Australia and overseas. It was an education in image-making, people and creative instinct — and undoubtedly shaped the photographer I became.
Today, my work moves between commercial, brand and editorial photography, but I’ve never been particularly interested in making the expected image.
My approach is tailored and expressive. Every brand has its own personality, rhythm and visual language, and discovering that is one of my favourite parts of the process. I like getting beneath the brief, finding the essence of what makes a brand interesting and then building a visual world around it — sometimes refined, sometimes playful, sometimes cinematic, sometimes a little strange.
There’s a fashion sensibility running through my work, but also a love of movement, unusual perspectives, beautiful light, bold composition and the perfectly imperfect moment. I’ll happily shoot into the sun, get on the floor, introduce blur, play with flash or push an idea somewhere unexpected if that’s where the story wants to go.
Because the best image isn’t always the safest one.
When I’m not shooting, I’m usually chasing some other kind of story — travelling, hiking, horse riding, swimming, exploring somewhere new or adventuring with my daughter. I’m still a country girl at heart, endlessly curious and probably happiest with a camera nearby.
For me, photography has always been about more than making something beautiful.
